Hi friends! Today I wanted to share some of my favourite alphabet centres with you! I'm hoping that it can become a reference for your weekly centre planning :) 1. ALPHABET PLAY DOUGH MATS Do your kids love play dough as much as mine do? I'm always looking for new play dough mats to add to the mix. I made these this summer and the letters are big enough to use with play dough or other loose parts like buttons or pom poms! Play dough is great for developing finger muscles which will help our kiddos with their writing as well! You can find these mats in my TPT store by clicking on the image below: 2. ALPHABET TRACING BOOKS Although I don't like having too many worksheet-type activities, I like having some dry erase activities to help kids who are just learning to print their letters. These printables are super simple and great for beginning writers! It gradually gets harder from top to bottom. Click on the image below to see these printables in my TPT store. 3. ALPHABET CONSTRUCTION My old school used to have these and my kids loved them there. Scholar's Choice was having a sale so I finally snagged them for our class! The kids love how tactile these are and the cards are super helpful for the kids who need the support. You can find this "Letter Construction" set on Amazon or the Scholar's Choice website. ALPHABET PUZZLE I'm usually not keen on printable puzzles (I like the real thing for puzzles) but the kids surprisingly ate this one up! The picture makes it self-correcting and it was a great opportunity for the SK's to be leaders and help their JK friends match and learn the letters :) You can find this puzzle by clicking on the image below: 5. ALPHABET Q-TIP PAINTING I shared this activity last year but I'm going to share it again because it's always a hit! The kids use paint and q-tips to trace the letters! This is another one that is great for developing fine motor skills. You can grab these sheets for free by clicking on the image below! 6. ALPHABET PATTERN BLOCKS I have SO many pattern blocks.. so I was super pumped when I found these alphabet pattern block mats! Best of all they are FREE! They are by Confessions of a Homeschooler and you can download them HERE. 7. ALPHABET TWEEZE & MAKE I found these letters at Dollarama. I set them out with some centimetre cubes and tweezers and had the kids make the letters! 8. ALPHABET ROLL & WRITE I put some magnetic letters into these insertable dice and had the kids roll and write the letter they got. Super easy, especially if you already have insertable dice and magnetic letters! 9. ALPHABET READ & SORT I wrote letters on these white beans, wrote letters on the muffin liners and then had the kids sort the beans into the matching muffin liners. Cheap and the small beans make it great fine motor practice for those little hands! 10. ALPHABET FIND & WRITE For this one, I put some letter beads in a bottle with black beans and had the kids find the letter beads and write the letters they found on a whiteboard. 11. ALPHABET PICK & WRITE {ON CHALKBOARD} I love these chalkboard from Handwriting Without Tears! I have the kids pick a tactile letter tile, trace the letter with their finger and then write the letter on the chalkboard. These chalkboards are great because they are double sided so they can flip it over and do another letter while that side dries! 12. ALPHABET MONSTER MUNCH This centre has been a hit every year! I got some tennis balls from the dollar store and then cut a slit in the middle with an exacto knife. Then I hot glued some googly eyes to make them "Tennis Ball Monsters". The kids squeeze the side of the mouth, say the name of the letter and feed the monster. 13. FIND ALL THE LETTERS! Bingo dabbers are always a hit so I made this centre to incorporate them! Here, students pick a letter out of the bin, say the letter, find it on their sheet and dab the letter. Then they put that letter back and find another until all the letters are dabbed. If this is too easy, I also set out the same activity but with pictures in the circles so that they pick a letter, identify the beginning sound and dab the letter that makes that sound. As I enter into my seventh year as an educator in Kindergarten and my fourth year in the same classroom, I thought it would be a good time to reflect on the changes to our learning environment over the years and share some of my thoughts as to why these changes have been made. To help with this comparison, I will use photos from the first year classroom layout and our current classroom setup. September 2014 September 2017 This is our whole group learning space. In the past, this space has been used to gather for whole group activities and sharing. When we are not all together in the space, it was sometimes used for extending building or playing math games. More often than not, it was left empty and took up a large space that was unused during thinking and learning time. This year, we decided to move the carpet to the corner of the room and incorporate it into the reading and calming space. As we are challenged to consider organizing the space to accommodate for multiple purposes, such as brief group meetings and opportunities for small-group and individual work (The Kindergarten Program, 2016), we wanted to make use of this large space during thinking and learning time. We can now briefly meet as a large group when needed and provide alternative seating (i.e., logs, mats), use the space for yoga and meditation, book browsing, listen to reading on the computers, and exploring our feelings and emotions. September 2014 September 2017 September 2017 Our creative area originally began on the opposite side of the classroom, but was moved closer to the sinks and art supply cupboards in more recent years. We always appreciated the large space for students to create on, and that has remained a staple in our classroom. This year however, we removed one of the four tables from the creative art area, and placed another two tables together for more focused small-group work. We are working with a new prep coverage model, whereby one teacher covers all kindergarten preps to support minimizing the number of adult transitions for our youngest learners (YRDSB, 2017). This teacher will be helping to build literacy behaviours with small groups of children as well as support them in play based learning experiences (YRDSB, 2017). With this in mind, we created a space close to our literacy materials to support this learning. It currently has a provocation (invitation to learn) which invites students to make their name using magnetic letters or window writers on mirrors. September 2014 September 2017 September 2017 The math area has evolved over the years. In the beginning, we had it placed in a corner but found that students were using the materials all the way on the other side of the classroom in the drama area. We then moved it beside drama and building so that the materials could be used interchangeably in all areas. This year, it remains in the same space but we added a carpet to the area, as we found students would sometimes use the larger carpet to explore math materials in the past. We didn't want to remove the table entirely, so we placed one beside the carpet for provocations and small-group work. We also started with an invitation that was available to explore during Welcome To Kindergarten in the spring, so that new students feel a sense of familiarity with the environment and materials when they enter on their first day. September 2014 September 2017 The building area has always been a favourite in the classroom and requires a big space for planning, creating, and constructing. During the first year, we had the building materials facing the large carpet. The space was nice and big, however we often found ourselves having to break down structures when transitioning to prep coverage, which in turn would interrupt the children's play. Having an area where they can save their work throughout the day was very important to us, so we used a smaller carpet to define this area. We also moved it closer to the drama and math areas, again to extend play and use materials interchangeably. This year we also added a table for various reasons and opportunities including planning, building on another surface/level, and to display provocations. September 2014 September 2017 The drama area has been an area that often ends up being too crowded for the amount of interest it receives from the children. This year, we are very excited for the initial layout of the drama area. Because we gained more space by moving the large carpet to the corner, we were able to open the drama area up to allow movement and creativity. We added bins with pots and pans, scarves, multicultural dolls, and healthy foods to start and can change them as interests change throughout the year. We also added greenery and a mirror for a more home-like feel. September 2014 September 2017 Our self-regulated snack area remains close to the cubbies for easy access and clean-up. In the morning it also serves as a sign-in area, where students can find their names and place it in the basket to show they are here. The same names are later used to show that they have visited the snack table throughout the morning. The cubbies hold picture frames, that will later be filled with pictures of families/children. The framed art work is from my first inquiry with my kindergarten students. These watercolour paintings are close to my heart, as they are a reminder of where I started on my inquiry journey and how far I have come in the last five years. We often keep pieces of past documentation displayed throughout the classroom to spark curiosity, wonder, and interest from our new and returning students. I learned the importance of preserving history through my Kindergarten AQ course that was instructed by Joanne Babalis. September 2015 September 2017 Our science and light exploration area has always been close to a window in order for the children to observe the outdoors from inside. This year, we have opened the space up to include a shelf with loose parts (i.e., feathers, rocks, seashells, and pinecones) and writing materials, a table to explore these materials closely or for provocations, and a light table with mirrors to explore materials on different surfaces and dimensions. My personal favourite addition is a four shelf science cart that comes apart to provide different visual and touch observations. It is also on wheels so that it can easily be taken outside during our outdoor explorations. September 2017 September 2017 Our classroom environment also includes learning in the outdoors. A previous post of mine; Outdoor Learning, will show you a glimpse into our outdoor learning area, which has also been updated this year. I look forward to blogging about it soon! We need to think about creating classroom environments that give children the opportunity for wonder, mystery and discovery; an environment that speaks to young children’s inherent curiosity and innate yearning for exploration is a classroom where children are passionate about learning ... Spring themed gardening sensory activity for preschoolers with a focus on alphabet learning!

Hello everyone! Welcome to Kindergarten in Room 110! We are so excited to meet all of you and begin an amazing year together :) We have been working hard over the summer to prepare for a brand new classroom and create fun-filled activities to start the year off with a bang :) As you know, this is Gatestone's first year having Full-Day Kindergarten (FDK). There are many new changes that come with the new program and we are excited to share those with you! The first and most noticeable change you will see is the classroom environment. We have aimed to create a classroom that is, in our opinion, visually similar to one's home. In order to ease the transition of being at home all day and now coming to school 5 days a week, we wanted the classroom to feel like a second home for students, full of warm and neutral colours, greenery, and natural materials. Not only will this help with the transition, but it will also help students remain calm, self-regulated, and focused. We tried to stay away from bright, primary colours and store-bought posters. Posters bought at Scholar's Choice or the Dollar Store really don't mean anything to children, especially at this age. However, if students look and see their creations on the wall to demonstrate the same things a poster would, it becomes much more meaningful. We'd like to share with you some pictures of the transition that took place over the summer. Many hours went into creating our new classroom so we hope you like it! Inspiration The use of natural materials was a must. We loved the idea of using things we could find in nature. We also loved the idea of using brown kraft paper instead of bright-coloured fadeless paper. The black really pops! The picture frames with student work is also a fantastic idea :) Dollarama here we come! We loved the idea of having a wooden vase so of course we had to make one of our own! Miss Pliura also saw this decoration on the right at Roots- the whole store was an inspiration, really! Loved this idea for a writing centre. We purchased mini clipboards instead. How neat is this?! Jars with craft supplies in them is a beautiful way to showcase different colours. Before Mrs. Nighswander had a lovely classroom that was functional for her students. We loved the flow of her classroom and the sectioned off areas for different types of play. We wanted to keep this functionality while changing up the colour scheme. We are so fortunate to have a SMARTboard iRover in our class. We can move it to wherever we want! During We stripped the classroom bare, cleaned it from top to bottom, and began to set it up using new furniture and plenty of new classroom materials. We had a vision in our mind of what we wanted the classroom to look like; neutral tones, lots of greenery, and a minimalistic feel. We had to decide which furniture to keep and which was still useable. We were also getting some brand new furniture as well, such as a library shelf, work bench, and a storage unit. There was bulletin board glued onto the wall and peeled all the paint of with it. We didn't have any green paint left, so a light coloured brown was used instead (that's just the primer!) We aren't too sure how we were denied a new kitchen set, seeing as how the doors to the fridge would barely shut, so Miss Pliura took it home and sanded it down, used a wooden stain, and fixed the hinges (with plenty of help!). You can see on the left all the scuff marks it had. The picture on the right is what it looked like after sanding. You'll see the difference it made soon! We wanted the cork board and the chalk boards to match. Our original plan was to cover it all with kraft paper, like in the inspiration picture above. However, we couldn't keep it from creasing and it just didn't meet our expectations (see picture below) :P We found bulletin board contact paper that matched the original cork board perfectly, so we decided to use that on the chalk board to make it all match. We used white bins to fill up the cubbies you see on the right and used a black border to frame the bulletin boards. After We loved the idea of having some home decor as soon as you walk in the door. The tree trunk vase turned out great! Scrapbook pages filled with pictures will soon fill the holder on the left. Can we just talk about how amazing this kitchen set turned out!? It's beautifully sanded and appealing to the eye. We received some adorable pots and pans that resemble real life cooking tools - We think Dramatic Play will be a big hit! How great is this workbench? (with a real-life mini vise!) Students can use blocks, tools, and other classroom materials to make anything their little hearts desire :) Blueprints for blocks, anyone? As you can see, we're still working on putting up our alphabet, but soon these bulletin boards will be filled with words, child's names, etc. In the middle of our bulletin boards we have our animal character Reading Strategies which we will learn about throughout the year. We are also super lucky to have a SMARTboard, which is where all of our Literacy and Math lessons take place. The kids also have the chance to play on it during Learning Centres :) Did you notice the curtains? Not only do they look nice, but they also prevent little hands from touching things on the shelves during our important lessons. We got these adorable little chairs from IKEA; they are perfect for a comfy Book Nook where kids can sit down and read/browse through some books. We also received an iPod stereo where we will connect our iPod and students can listen to audio MP3s to certain books (the ones with the red stickers!) Lots of cozy stuffed animals and pillows to make them feel at home :) This is the beginning of our Science centre. We started off with just some small, natural materials along with some mirrors and magnifying glasses! Who doesn't love sand! The sand table will be lots of fun :) In our long IKEA shelf, we have stored Playdoh and our train set. In our storage unit, we have plenty of fun manipulatives for students to use. And last but not least, our Creative centre. Here, students can make beautiful pictures, write a letter, or build a crazy creation using all of our craft supplies (thanks, parents!). We are still waiting on our Art easel, and when that arrives, students will be able to paint here :) We hope you enjoyed this LONG post about our classroom transformation. Hi friends! How was your first week back at school? I have the sweetest class ever and I am enjoying them so much already! But I am finding it difficult to get into the swing of things. My new school is a late start school and the dismissal bell doesn't ring until 3:40! By the time our last student is picked up I feel like I have such little time before I need to pack up and leave to go home and make dinner! I'm hoping to get into a better routine soon :) Anyways, I used to do a Five for Friday post but since that linky is not being hosted anymore I thought I would pop in every Friday and do a weekly round-up type post. This way you can come here if you need direct links of things you see in my Instagram posts! So here are some of the activities we worked on this week! 1. BUILDING NAMES WITH LETTER BEADS I always set out lots of name activities the first week of school so I can find out if my students can recognize their name and the letters in their name. It is also great for encouraging the students to learn each other's names! I already had the uppercase letter beads from last year (I bought them from Michaels) and had just bough some lowercase letter beads from Learning Resources so I set them out with these name cards and encouraged the students to build their names! NAME PLAY DOUGH MATS As usual, my new group loves play dough! I set out these name play dough mats and some alphabet cookie cutters I found at a local dollar store. You can grab these play dough mats in the same free editable file I mentioned above by clicking here. 3. HOW MANY BUGS IN THE BOX? This activity was a hit last year and a hit again this year! I read the students the book "How Many Bugs In a Box?". Then I showed them how to put bugs in a box, ask their partner "How many bugs do you think are in my box?" and have their partner guess a number between 1-10. The partner would grab the number card that matched their guess. Then the opened the box and counted the bugs to see if the guess was right. They loved this activity and it's great for one-to-one correspondence, numeral recognition, building community and oral language! 4. MAKING LETTERS WITH LOOSE PARTS I had these mats set-out with play dough the first few days but switched it with loose parts near the end of the week. They loved this one! Students were asked to build letters with loose parts using the tongs. The tongs are great for building strong finger muscles, which benefits all learners but especially those who are working up to printing with a pencil! This is another 5-senses activity. We did 10 different materials, ranging from feathers to sandpaper and everything in between. We had the kids feel each piece of material and then had them glue them onto the hands. We asked the kids to describe the material and what if felt like to them. I LOVE the answers that we got from some of the kids. My own little girl, had some that made me crack up. The sandpaper felt like Poppa's face, the fake leather felt like a couch and one of them felt like her dog Brody. It was fun to hear their answers. Fabric stores are great to look for material for this project. A remnant can go a long way when your talking about 1 inch pieces. Also look at the craft supplies and hardware stores. We used sponges and Brillo pads, the possibilities are endless.

1-2-3 Come Do Some Kissing Hand Activities With Me My kiddos LOVE the story The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. Little ones identify with the anxious feelings of Chester the raccoon, when he doesn’t want to go to school. The warming kiss from his mom, resonates in comfort for them as well. With that in mind, I created a whopping 102-page Kissing Hand literacy packet. I hope you enjoy it as much as I loved designing it. Little ones can simply color him, then color, trim & glue the tail to the bottom. Older students can write 3-4 things they liked about school or 2-3 emotions they felt during the first day or week. The larger raccoon is just a head & tail. I call it "A Tale About Me!" With a play on the word "tale/tail". It's an interesting alternative to the "All About Me" booklets. The tail of the raccoon provides simple writing prompts for kiddos to finish: name, birthday, an interesting fact about themselves; what they want to be when they grow up, plus favorites: color, candy, activities, animal, foods, & TV show, all written on the raccoon's tail. This craftivity is a super-fun way to learn about your new students, and completed projects make an adorable bulletin board. In this blog post from Modern Teaching Aids, we explore 10 different ways you can incorporate natural resources into the classroom.

My daughter has one of the best kindergarten teachers imaginable. She is caring, patient, and so imaginative. Her activities seem to seamlessly flow together, integrating all content areas. In short, she is amazing! One of the activities, that I really loved, was her newest addition to the blocks center. My daughter came home and told me that their "Blocks Center is really rocking the house!" That is high praise coming from my baby. A few days later, I got to go in and see this "rocking" center for myself. It really is amazing. It's so amazing that I decided to put my own spin on it and share it with you! The center has pieces of felt (or foam) for different symbols on a map. All the pieces are hand cut and are just a quick shape in different colors. The center that I made includes: rivers, lakes, roads, houses, bushes, and trees. You can get a free copy of the map key here. Print out the key and cut out felt, then you have all you need to make "Interactive Maps"! Cut out some pictures from a magazine and label them for specific places in the community. Simple and fun! The part I love the most about this activity is that it can include math, writing, science, social studies, and so much more! I wanted to include specific places in my version, so I went through my clip art and whipped up a few. I love how every map will be different and each child's personality can shine through. When I started making our version at home, there were only straight roads. This created a lot of protesting from my kids. Thus, a variety of roads were created. They were right, it does make the maps more interesting and realistic. As we played with the concept, I added task cards. This will allow kids to create maps with a model. It is really great for kids that have a difficult time starting an activity without direction. Sometimes, open ended play seems to overwhelm these children. Adding task cards with directions, allows these children to work from a task. AND task cards give kids practice reading numerals and using one-to-one correspondence. I also made blank task cards, so that partners could create tasks for each other. It's more fun to do a friend's activity, than one provided by the teacher. Why not capitalize on their enthusiasm for "being the teacher"? Adding onto the idea of "being the teacher", I love adding in partner games. Each child can have a turn I love adding a recording sheet to the activity, because it holds each child accountable for their learning and provides a physical record that is sent home to their parents. One thing I so appreciate about my daughter's teacher is that every center has some written or physical component that comes home. I am able to infer from the directions, or completed project, what my daughter is doing that day. I am able to ask her more specific questions about her day, after looking over the work that comes home. It allows me to get more meaningful information about my daughter's learning that day. I love having different recording sheets for the same activity. It can change the whole focus of the activity and it makes it very easy to differentiate. I hope you found some easy ideas to use with your kids. I love that you can just add felt and open up a whole new world...
